NASA's Voyager 1 Encounters Communication Issue
Gibberish Data Transmission Raises Concerns
Telemetry Modulation Unit Suspected
NASA's iconic Voyager 1 spacecraft, which has been exploring interstellar space since 2012, has encountered a communication issue. In December 2023, the spacecraft began transmitting an indecipherable stream of ones and zeros, described by NASA as "gibberish."
The team of engineers and scientists responsible for Voyager 1 have traced the issue to a part of the spacecraft's flight data systems telemetry modulation unit. This unit is responsible for encoding and transmitting data back to Earth. The unit appears to be malfunctioning, preventing Voyager 1 from sending readable information.
The latest issue experienced by Voyager 1 first surfaced in November 2023. At that time, the telemetry modulation unit began sending random and indecipherable data. Despite attempts by ground controllers to reset the unit, the issue persisted.
Voyager 1 and its twin spacecraft, Voyager 2, have both reached interstellar space, marking a historic milestone in space exploration. Despite the current communication issue, both spacecraft continue their journeys through the Universe, providing valuable insights into the outer reaches of our solar system.
NASA's Eyes on the Solar System app offers real-time tracking of both Voyager spacecraft, allowing users to follow their ongoing missions.
