Maple Leafs' Matthews wins 2nd Rocket Richard Trophy
Matthews had an eight-game goal streak before being blanked the past 48 hours
He finished one shy of 70 goals
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews has won his second Rocket Richard Trophy after leading the NHL in goals during the 2023-24 season.
Matthews scored 69 goals in 82 games, just one shy of the elusive 70-goal mark.
The 26-year-old had an eight-game goal streak earlier in the season, but was held off the scoresheet in his final four games.
Despite falling short of 70 goals, Matthews' performance was still impressive.
He led the league in goals per game (0.84) and was third in points per game (1.35).
Matthews also helped the Maple Leafs finish second in the Atlantic Division and reach the second round of the playoffs.
He is now one of just 21 players in NHL history to win multiple Rocket Richard Trophies.
Matthews' first Rocket Richard Trophy came in the 2021-22 season, when he scored 60 goals in 73 games.
He is now the first player to win the Rocket Richard Trophy in consecutive seasons since Alex Ovechkin did it in 2012-13 and 2013-14.
Matthews is one of the most dynamic players in the NHL and is a key part of the Maple Leafs' success.
He is a threat to score every time he touches the puck and is one of the most exciting players to watch in the league.
The Maple Leafs are fortunate to have Matthews on their team and he is a big reason why they are one of the Stanley Cup contenders.
